A council home in Meadow Well, North Tyneside, has been closed after persistent antisocial behaviour left other residents feeling unsafe in their neighbourhood. North Tyneside Council took possession of the property following court action, with officers securing the home on Tuesday morning.
Court action and eviction
The eviction follows two partial closure orders that restricted access to the home, as well as further legal action to end the tenancy. After obtaining a possession order requiring the tenant to leave, the council applied for a warrant of possession when the property was not vacated by the court’s deadline.
The Community Protection Team, working in partnership with Northumbria Police, recovered possession of the property on Tuesday. The action is intended to bring relief to neighbours affected by antisocial behaviour associated with the address.
Council and police response
North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Karen Clark, said: “People should be able to enjoy their homes and feel safe in their neighbourhoods with fear or disturbance. Antisocial behaviour can make daily life difficult for those living nearby.”
She added: “We are committed to making our neighbourhoods safe, secure and places to be proud of, and we will continue working alongside Northumbria Police and other partners to tackle these issues head-on. Taking possession of this property follows sustained work by our officers to address those problems and protect neighbours. We will use every legal power at our disposal to ensure the safety of our residents.”
Reporting antisocial behaviour
Sergeant Leanne Hall, of Northumbria Police’s North Tyneside Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Anti-social behaviour, wherever it occurs in our communities, is never acceptable and we will always strive to identify those responsible for such activity. When we became aware of issues relating to this property, we began investigating alongside our partners at the council to compile evidence.”
She added: “Together we’ve now been able to evict the tenant and secure a closure order on the property so that it can no longer cause problems to neighbours. This is a fantastic example of partnership working for the benefit of local residents and we thank them for their continued support.”
