Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi is facing an uncertain future at the Sharks after being investigated for alleged misconduct during a team-building trip. The double World Cup-winning forward could have his contract terminated if found guilty, according to reports emerging from South Africa.
Disciplinary process underway
The Durban-based franchise has launched an internal disciplinary process following an alleged violation of team protocols. Afrikaans newspaper Rapport reports that the incident occurred during a pre-season team-building exercise at Bayala Private Safari Lodges.
The allegations centre on claims that players continued socialising into the early hours despite instructions from coaching staff regarding preparations for a return to full training. Mbonambi's future at the Sharks now hangs in the balance, with the franchise reportedly weighing up whether to terminate his contract should he be found guilty.
Senior figures implicated
The hooker has been conspicuously absent from both training sessions and matchday squads despite reportedly being fit, while Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has refused to be drawn on his situation when pressed by journalists.
Reports suggest Mbonambi's position is particularly precarious given that he was allegedly present at a team meeting in which Pietersen set out his expectations for players during the trip. Players were reportedly permitted to socialise on Tuesday evening but were expected to refocus on training commitments thereafter.
Mbonambi is alleged to have violated those instructions, with his standing as one of the squad's senior figures said to be a significant factor in the matter. Fellow senior Springbok Trevor Nyakane was also reportedly implicated in a breach of protocols, though Rapport suggests he may escape more severe punishment owing to his absence from the meeting in which Pietersen outlined expectations.
Springboks future in doubt
The situation could carry consequences beyond Mbonambi's domestic career, with the veteran hooker also facing an uphill battle to reclaim his place in the Springboks squad. The 35-year-old, who has earned 82 caps, played a crucial role in South Africa's Rugby World Cup victories in both 2019 and 2023.
Nevertheless, injuries have hampered his involvement over the past year, leaving him with considerable ground to make up before he can force his way back into international contention. As South Africa gear up for the November Test window, these latest developments could throw further doubt over his prospects of earning a recall to the national squad.
The Sharks are expected to determine the outcome of their disciplinary proceedings, with Mbonambi's future at the franchise hinging on the findings. A source told IOL: "Out of respect for the disciplinary process, the Sharks decline to comment."
