Human remains discovered on a mountainside in Wyoming nearly a year ago have been confirmed as those of John Gillies, a missing Scottish man from Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire. The Sublette County Sheriff's Office announced the identification on June 30, following a complex investigation involving local, state, federal, and international agencies.
Discovery and Recovery
The skeletal remains were found on September 6 by forest workers near Sweetwater Gap, Wyoming. Wyoming Game and Fish workers initially discovered scattered bones, prompting a large-scale search. A 14-member team from the Sublette County Sheriff's Office, along with Sublette County Search and Rescue and the US Forest Service, searched a 20-mile area of rugged terrain. They recovered an estimated 85% of the skeletal remains. Local police estimated the remains had been on the mountainside for approximately six years.
Identification Process
Investigators collected personal items at the scene and collaborated with Interpol and Police Scotland to identify the missing man. Police contacted Mr. Gillies's former wife, who provided crucial information. She told officers: “I wanted you to know he was more than bones.” The sheriff's office noted: “Her compassion and willingness to assist provided invaluable insight during the investigation and served as a powerful reminder that every unidentified person is someone’s loved one.”
Detectives also contacted Saint Mary's Parish Church in Kirkintilloch, which helped locate Mr. Gillies's family before an international death notification was issued. DNA samples confirmed the identity of Mr. Gillies, who would have turned 69 this year.
Return to Scotland
The Sublette County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Mr. Gillies's family has been informed, and efforts are underway to return his remains to Scotland. Sheriff KC Lehr said: “This case is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved and the strength of partnerships that extend well beyond our county and even our nation’s borders. What began as the discovery of unidentified remains in a remote area of Wyoming ultimately brought together local, state, federal, and international partners with one shared goal: to give a family answers. We are grateful to everyone who played a role in helping bring John home.”
