A former teacher who murdered a 13-month-old baby after a campaign of sexual abuse has been jailed. Jamie Varley, 37, was found guilty of murdering Preston Davey during a sexual assault on July 27, 2023. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, also received a sentence for his role in the death and a joint sexual attack on the child four days earlier.
The Background
Preston Davey, born to convicted killer Sarah Davey, was placed in the couple's care in April 2023 at nine months old. For months, Varley subjected the toddler to horrific physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. McGowan-Fazakerley initially turned a blind eye before participating in a joint attack on Preston on July 23.
Fatal Incident
On July 27, Preston was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in cardiac arrest and pronounced dead at 7.18pm. The couple were sentenced at Preston Crown Court.
Sentencing Details
Varley was convicted of murder, grievous bodily harm, sexual assault, cruelty, and making, taking, and distributing indecent images of Preston. McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of causing or allowing Preston's death, cruelty, and sexual assault. Both will serve lengthy prison terms.
