At least 20 children and one teacher were killed when a school bus crashed into a rock on a treacherous road in eastern Uganda, local officials confirmed. The accident occurred around 8 p.m. local time on Thursday in Kapchorwa, as the group was returning from a school trip.
Bus Lost Control After Mechanical Failure
According to reports, the driver lost control of the bus after experiencing a mechanical failure. The vehicle veered off the road in Chekwatit Village before overturning. Another 60 people are believed to have sustained injuries in the collision.
Rescue and Response
Emergency services rushed to the scene to assist the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals. The Uganda Police Force confirmed the death toll, stating that the bus had been carrying pupils and staff from a local school.
The cause of the mechanical failure is under investigation. Officials have not yet released the names of the victims or the exact number of people on board.
