A large police presence is on Liverpool Road in Huyton this morning after a serious crash. Police were called in the early hours of Friday, July 24 following a report that a black Cupra had come off the road, causing damage to a lamppost.
Road closures and diversions
Road closures are in place on Shellingford Road, Prescot Road, Liverpool Road, Somerset Road, Back Dovecot Place, Dovecot Place, Taurus Road, Turriff Road, Dinas Lane, Lordens Road and Fincham Road. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area while the police investigation is ongoing.
Due to the closures, several bus services have been diverted. Merseytravel said: "Due to a police incident on East Prescot Road between Finch Lane and Page Moss Dovecot, Arriva service 7, 8, 9, 10, 10A & 10B are diverted via Finch Lane and Princes Drive in both directions. We currently have no timescale for this diversion."
Witness accounts
People in the area reported being woken by a helicopter low overhead at around 2am. Debris is visible across the road, and the car appears to have hit a lamppost on a grassy verge in the middle of Liverpool Road at the junction with Ashover Avenue.
One mum told the ECHO: "My daughter was awake at the time. She heard it all. The bang woke me up." Her daughter added: "It was after one. I was still awake, the bang was so loud, I thought a lorry had overturned that's how loud it was. I looked outside my window and there was smoke everywhere." The mum continued: "We went outside after and police were telling everyone to stay back. It was so awful, it looks so bad there's debris everywhere. It's sad. Really terrifying."
