A multi-vehicle crash blocked a large section of the A19 northbound during the morning rush hour on Thursday, causing delays that stretched as far south as Murton.
The incident, which involved a number of cars, took place close to the Herrington Interchange in Sunderland. The northbound carriageway was blocked for about 45 minutes.
Police response and injuries
Northumbria Police reported that officers were alerted to the incident at 8.20am. While emergency services were in attendance, it was not thought that anyone had suffered serious injury.
The vehicles involved were recovered, and the road was clear prior to 10am.
