Police in Maharashtra, India, have arrested 11 adults and detained three minors in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 40-year-old woman who was collecting firewood in a forest. The incident took place on June 2 in a forest in Jamner taluka, Jalgaon district, according to police officials.
Details of the Attack
The woman was with a male friend when they were confronted by a group of men known to them. Police allege the group threatened the pair before two of the suspects sexually assaulted the woman. Other members of the group reportedly recorded the assault on video and threatened the male companion.
The woman did not immediately report the incident to police because she had been intimidated, officers said. However, the case came to light after the video allegedly began circulating on social media around June 25. A formal complaint was then lodged at Fattepur Police Station.
Arrests and Legal Action
Police have named 15 suspects in the case. As of the latest update, 11 adults have been arrested, and three minors have been detained. The adult suspects, all reportedly under the age of 30 and working as labourers, were remanded into police custody by a local court until July 4.
The accused have been booked under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (gang rape), Section 77 relating to voyeurism, and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act 2000 over the alleged recording and circulation of the video.
