Ex-Police Officer Jailed for Rape and Murder Fantasies
Ex-Police Officer Jailed for Rape and Murder Fantasies

A former police officer who idolised serial killers and harboured fantasies of rape and murder has been sentenced to four years in prison. Brian Darby, 80, was initially jailed for life in 2002 for attempted murder and conspiracy to murder after stalking potential victims and attacking a woman with a wire noose. He was released on licence in 2017 but soon began viewing indecent images of children and sharing horrifying fantasies online.

Details of the Offences

Following his arrest in February 2026, police discovered that Darby had created and distributed AI-generated indecent images of children. He also posted sexual fantasies on Reddit, including one describing the strangulation of his wife with family encouragement. In online chats, he expressed ambitions to strangle, smother, and drown women, and suggested that schools should train girls to be sex slaves. Prosecutor Bartholomew O'Toole told Wood Green Crown Court that one post spelled out the 'strangulation of his wife with family gathering around to voice encouragement and advice'.

Judge's Assessment

Judge John Law sentenced Darby to four years in prison with an additional two years on licence. He noted that Darby was 'emotionally detached and indifferent' during questioning and 'did not appear to be embarrassed or ashamed'. The judge assessed him as a dangerous offender, citing his 'entrenched interest in violent sexual material involving children and adults, your online dissemination of that material and fantasies, and a pattern of offending'. He warned that Darby may die in jail without ever being released again.

Background and Previous Convictions

Darby was sacked from Leicestershire Police in the 1970s after being convicted of indecently assaulting young boys. He later worked as a health and safety officer for the BBC. In 2001, he and his lover Jeanette White plotted to murder a woman and her children, exchanging 450 pages of letters about serial killing, rape, cannibalism, and necrophilia. In 2000, Darby posed as a BBC researcher to gain entry to a woman's home in Ealing, where he placed a wire noose around her neck intending to rape and kill her. She escaped into the street.

Defence and Plea

Defence lawyer Olivia Beach said Darby accepts his actions were 'wrong' and blames an 'addiction which is something out of his control'. The court heard that Darby volunteers in prison to listen to other inmates' problems. Darby, from Enfield, north London, pleaded guilty to nine obscene communications charges, three counts of making indecent photographs of a child, and two counts of distributing indecent photographs of a child. He will serve about two and a half years before being considered for release, but must also convince the Parole Board he is safe to be freed from his life sentence.
