Rapist Who Restricted Breathing Jailed for Seven Years

A woman who was raped and had her breathing restricted by Dewi Jones has spoken of her terror, saying she thought she was going to die. Jones, 36, from Copse, Runcorn, was sentenced to seven years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court on June 26 after being found guilty of rape. He denied the charges, forcing his victim to endure a trial, but Cheshire Police said the jury saw through his lies.

Details of the Attack

The court heard that in 2024, Jones orally raped the woman and restricted her breathing, leaving her terrified and convinced she was going to die. Despite her protests, he refused to stop, and she had to physically fight him off. After the attack, Jones mocked her and blamed her for what had happened.

Jury Verdict and Sentencing

Detective Constable Kelsie Sherratt of Cheshire Police said: “Despite the overwhelming evidence in text messages back and forth on her terrifying ordeal and his general behaviour towards her, Jones still went to trial forcing the victim to relive the experience in court. The jury saw through his lies, and he was given a significant sentence for his despicable and dangerous behaviour.”

In addition to the seven-year prison term, Jones was handed an indefinite restraining order and ordered to sign the sex offenders register.

Context on Sentencing for Rape

According to Lawtons Solicitors, the average prison sentence for rape in the UK ranges from four to 19 years. There is no statutory minimum sentence for rape, and the maximum is life imprisonment. However, a life sentence typically means the offender will serve around 15 years in prison, followed by a life licence, meaning they can be recalled to prison if they commit another crime.
