Avon and Somerset Police have arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of rape following a serious sexual assault on an 11-year-old girl near a playground in Bath. The incident occurred in a wooded area adjacent to the Clarks Way playground in Odd Down at approximately 5pm on Wednesday, June 24.
Arrest Made After Public Appeal
The suspect was taken into custody on Friday, July 3, a week after police issued a public appeal for information. A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed: "A man in his 40s was arrested yesterday on suspicion of rape and he remains in police custody. Our investigation continues." The arrest follows extensive inquiries, including CCTV reviews and house-to-house searches in the Odd Down area.
Details of the Assault
Police have described the attack as a "serious sexual assault" and are treating it with the utmost priority. Detective Inspector Hannah Marsh stated: "This is an incredibly serious incident and significant resources are in place to support our investigation. We are prioritising efforts to identify the offender." The victim and her family are being supported by specially trained officers.

The investigation is being led by Operation Bluestone, the police's rape and serious sexual offences team. Officers are continuing to analyse CCTV footage and have urged anyone with information to come forward. Neighbourhood officers have increased patrols in the area to reassure the community. DI Marsh added: "I would urge anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the incident, or anyone who matches the description provided, to contact us."
