Former police officer Christopher Cave has been jailed for one year and nine months after admitting to a sexual relationship with a crime victim while on duty. The 62-year-old, from Formby, began the relationship in 2004 while serving with Nottinghamshire Police, and it continued for around seven years until early 2011.
Background and sentencing
Cave later joined South Yorkshire Police, where the allegations first emerged in 2022. He pleaded guilty to two counts of misconduct in a public office at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday, June 29. He was arrested and suspended from his role as an evidence review officer in June 2022, having served as a police officer with the force from 2010 to 2017. Cave formally resigned from South Yorkshire Police in December 2023.
Impact and investigation
Detective Constable Nicola Milner, leading the investigation, said: "Cave crudely and blatantly abused the trust placed in him as a police officer and the victim in this case remains at the forefront of our minds. His conduct fell well below the standard that is expected of our officers and we welcome the result of the sentencing in court."
Cave will now face an internal misconduct hearing following the conclusion of the criminal proceedings.
