Adam Doughton, assistant head teacher at St Joseph's Roman Catholic High School in Newport, has admitted performing sex acts on another person in public. He appeared at Newport Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded guilty to outraging public decency by behaving in an indecent manner.
Offence and sentence
The offence took place in Newport on August 22 this year, the court was told at the hearing on October 2. Doughton, 34, from Blackwood, was given a 12-month conditional discharge, reduced from 18 months because of his guilty plea.
He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £26 victim surcharge, with both payments due in full by October 30.
School and council response
Doughton remains on the list of teachers registered as eligible to work on the Education Workforce Council (EWC) Wales register online. He is also still listed on the St Joseph's High School website, where he is named as one of the assistant heads and a history teacher.
A spokesman for Newport council said: "St Joseph’s Roman Catholic High School and Newport City Council have followed the appropriate procedures in relation to the member of staff."
The spokesman added: "The incident occurred outside the school and did not involve anyone else from the school community. We will be making no further comment."
Professional roles
Doughton is listed as a co-author of a GCSE history revision guide for exam board the WJEC, published on August 31 this year. A profile accompanying the publication states: "Adam Doughton is currently assistant headteacher at St Joseph’s RC High School in Newport."
The profile adds: "He was previously head of history and continues to teach both WJEC GCSE and A-level history." It also notes he is "currently an examiner, moderator, and team leader across GCSE and A-level history" and was "a specification developer for the new specification".
