Wilmington Airport in North Carolina was evacuated on Thursday, March 12, following a bomb threat. The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office confirmed the evacuation and said the bomb squad was on the scene.
The airport announced the threat via a Facebook post shortly before 9pm, stating: 'Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure everyone's safety, the terminal has been evacuated.' The post added that the bomb squad was conducting a sweep to assess the credibility of the threat.
In a later update, the airport said: 'The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad has completed their sweep and determined the terminal is safe for operations. Operations may now resume.' Authorities have not confirmed whether an explosive device was actually present.
The incident is part of a series of recent bomb threats, including a separate case in Michigan where a man drove a vehicle packed with explosives into a synagogue. The driver, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, was shot by security personnel before causing destruction.
