A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a 17-year-old was fatally stabbed in a park near a high school in Sydney's north-west. The attack occurred at about 4.20pm on Monday in Rouse Hill, with the victim suffering a stab wound to his thigh. He died shortly after paramedics arrived.
The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, surrendered at a police station with a parent about three hours after the incident. He appeared in a children's court on Tuesday, where he did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody for eight weeks. The case is due to return to court on 23 January.
Police have stated that the confrontation was not random and that those involved were not students from the nearby high school. Several female witnesses rushed to help the victim, with Detective Superintendent Naomi Moore praising their bravery. 'It would have been a horrifically confronting situation for those people,' she said.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns expressed his condolences, calling the death 'an unimaginable loss'. Local MP Michelle Rowland also condemned the violence, saying there is 'no place in our community for these acts of senseless violence'.
