A 16-year-old boy has died following a collision between a motorbike and a car in Northumberland. The crash happened at around 6.40pm on Monday on the A196 at Stobhill, Morpeth, directly opposite the junction of Bowyer Way.
Police received a report of a two-vehicle collision involving a black Yamaha motorcycle and a grey Volkswagen Polo. Both vehicles were travelling in a north easterly direction away from the Morpeth area when they collided.
Boy dies at the scene
The teenager, who was travelling on the Yamaha, sadly died at the scene. A 24-year-old man, also on the motorbike, was taken to hospital where he remains receiving treatment for serious injuries.
The next of kin of both the boy and the man have been made aware and are being supported by officers. The driver of the VW, a woman in her 40s, remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries.
Witness appeal launched
Officers are appealing for witnesses and are especially keen to hear from anyone with CCTV, dash cam, or doorbell footage, as well as those who may have seen the motorcycle before the collision in the Morpeth area.
Sergeant Steven Chappell, of Northumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit (RPU), said: “Our thoughts are firmly with the family of the two people who have been injured or died in this incident – and we’ll provide them with whatever support they need. We are carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of the collision and have already undertaken several enquiries.”
He added: “I would ask anyone with information which could assist us to get in touch. We are particularly keen to hear from those who may have seen or have footage of the events leading up to the collision.”
Emergency response
The North East Ambulance Service dispatched three double crewed ambulances, a clinical team leader and a specialist paramedic to the scene. The service was also supported by Great North Air Ambulance Service.
