A teenager has been charged in connection with the death of a young barman in Glasgow city centre. Emergency crews rushed to Royal Exchange Square at around 3.05am on Sunday, October 4, following reports of a disturbance. Daniel Colrain sustained fatal injuries during the incident.

Death and investigation

The 21-year-old was taken to hospital but could not be saved and died on Monday. A post-mortem examination took place on Tuesday. Another man, also aged 21, sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Police Scotland confirmed this morning, Thursday, October 8, that the teen has now been charged and is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court later today. He was the third man to be arrested following the incident in the Merchant City and the only man arrested in connection with Daniel's death.

Other arrests

Previously, a 19-year-old man was also arrested in connection with the disturbance. He has been released pending further enquiries. Another man, aged 21, was also assaulted and sustained minor injuries during the incident. A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with this and is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

The force confirmed that enquiries are ongoing. Detective Inspector Jonny MacKinnon, of Greater Glasgow CID, said: "I would like to thank the public for their assistance with this investigation."

Tributes to Daniel

Daniel worked at the Old Smiddy bar in Cathcart in Glasgow's Southside, where he grew up. Colleagues paid tribute to their "dear friend" and set up a GoFundMe for his family which has now raised over £20,000.

A statement on the page read: "We are completely heartbroken to share that our dear colleague and friend, Daniel, has passed away. To know Daniel was to experience his warmth and kindness first hand. Over the past three years at The Smiddy, he built wonderful friendships with every member of our staff and became a cherished part of our close-knit group.

"He knew all of our regulars by name, chatted with them for hours, and was a beloved presence in the community where he grew up. He brought so much light to our team and will be dearly, dearly missed."

During this difficult time, we are raising funds to support Daniel’s family and assist with his funeral and memorial arrangements. If you are able to contribute or share this page, any support would be deeply appreciated. All of our thoughts, love, and condolences are with his family.

Heartbroken regulars took to the boozer's Facebook page to share their memories of Daniel. Michael Campbell wrote: "Daniel was a lovely big guy, not a bad bone in his body, just loved a laugh and a joke and all the Smiddy regulars loved a chat and a laugh with him. What a terrible shame that his young life was taken in such an unruly manner."
