Greater Manchester Police are investigating a video that appears to show a York City player punching a fan after the club secured promotion back to the Football League on Saturday. The incident occurred during a pitch invasion at Rochdale following York's 1-1 draw, which sealed the National League title and a return to the EFL for the first time in a decade.
The video, circulating online, shows a confrontation between a supporter and a York player who was on his knees at the final whistle. As stewards attempted to separate them, the player stood up and appeared to punch the fan. Police said they are assessing the video and reviewing CCTV footage, and have linked with both clubs and the National League.
Four Rochdale fans were arrested on suspicion of assault, pitch incursion, and public order offences. A York supporter was also arrested on suspicion of assault and will be interviewed later. The Press Association has contacted both clubs for comment.
York needed only a draw to avoid defeat, but fell behind to Emmanuel Dieseruvwe's header in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Josh Stones equalised in the 13th minute of added time, sparking wild celebrations. Manager Stuart Maynard said on the club's X account: 'I think it was written in the stars. The football gods were with us.'
Meanwhile, Forest Green Rovers denied reports that a Morecambe fan was ejected for eating a bacon sandwich. In a statement on X, the club said the ejection was due to 'over exuberance' and repeated warnings, not the sandwich.
