Freshly painted parking bays in a residential street in Paisley are said to have sparked "mayhem" as an elected member calls for the move to be reversed.
Renfrewshire Council has added refreshed markings in the recently resurfaced Greenlaw Avenue but it has been claimed many of the spaces do not follow the pattern of how people typically park at the address.
On one side of the road, the bays are positioned parallel to the pavement while on the other side they are perpendicular to the pavement.
Councillor raises concerns
Councillor Neill Graham, who represents Paisley Northeast and Ralston, explained: "Residents have always parked their vehicles perpendicular to the pavement on both sides of the road.
"This arrangement has allowed traffic to flow in both directions without any significant issues with obstruction or access.
"This was already a very busy street with parking hard enough before the council's decision to install parking bays."
The Conservative group leader has confirmed he has been inundated with complaints about the issue in the last week. He believes the situation has led to a significant reduction in the amount of parking that is actually available to people.
Residents 'furious' over changes
Councillor Graham added: "Residents are furious about the changes made to their street without any prior consultation with them. This decision must be reversed.
"This has already caused mayhem on the road with residents having to park several streets away which also causes a safety issue when parking at night."
Greenlaw Avenue has been resurfaced in recent weeks as part of a multi-million-pound programme of works on carriageways across Renfrewshire's towns and villages.
Council defends layout
When contacted, the local authority outlined why the spaces have been laid out in this way. A council spokesperson said: "The width of Greenlaw Avenue means it is unsafe to provide end-on bays on both sides of the street.
"The new parking space markings on the road are the same as the old bay markings. This layout was adopted for road safety reasons and the refreshed bay markings show where it is appropriate and safe to park on the road."
