Oldham House Fire: Residents Evacuate as Crews Battle Blaze

Residents fled after a house fire broke out in Oldham on Wednesday evening, June 24, prompting a large emergency response. The blaze occurred on Harewood Drive in Royton, with police and fire crews arriving at the scene shortly after the alarm was raised at around 6:45pm.

Emergency Response and Evacuation

Multiple fire engines and police vehicles raced to the residential street. It was confirmed that the occupants of the mid-terraced property had evacuated the building before the fire service arrived. The incident was scaled down at approximately 9pm.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said, “At around 6:45pm this evening (Wednesday, 24th June), firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a domestic property on Harewood Drive in Royton. Six fire engines from Rochdale, Heywood, Blackley and Philips Park fire stations, along with the aerial appliance quickly arrived at the scene, where a mid-terraced property was alight. The occupants of the property had evacuated before the arrival of the fire service.”

Firefighting Efforts and Ongoing Safety

Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze using a turntable ladder and covering jets to bring it under control. The cause and extent of the fire have not yet been confirmed. Pictures from the scene showed a heavy fire service presence, with multiple fire engines parked along the street beside police vehicles. The GMFRS spokesperson added, “Firefighters have been working hard to extinguish the fire, using a turntable ladder and covering jets to bring the blaze under control. The incident is now being scaled down, however some crews remain in attendance as they work to make the area safe.”
