A road in Old Trafford has been closed after a fire broke out at a church on Thursday evening (October 8). Fire services were called to St Johns Road at around 5.30pm following reports of the blaze at the Church of St John the Evangelist.
Scene cordoned off
Photos from the scene show police tape around the junctions between St John's Road, Ayres Road and Henrietta Street. According to the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), the fire spread to part of the church ground floor.
No injuries have been reported. Firefighters remain on the scene with support from Greater Manchester Police.
Crews damp down hotspots
A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At around 5.30pm today (Thursday 8 October), fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a church on St Johns Road in Old Trafford.
“Six fire engines from Moss Side, Salford and Manchester Central, alongside an aerial appliance, quickly attended the scene.
“The fire involved part of the ground floor of the church. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire and clear smoke from the building.
“Crews completed searches of the church and its tower, with everyone accounted for and no injuries reported.
“Firefighters remain in attendance and are damping down hotspots and working with Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe.”
