Major incident as train hits vehicle in West Lancashire

A major incident has been declared after a train reportedly hit a vehicle in the Burscough area of West Lancashire. Images show a Northern train has stopped abruptly next to fields, with parts of a damaged vehicle visible close to where it halted.

Emergency services respond

Several ambulances and a fire engine were called to the scene at around 3.30pm, according to the Liverpool Echo. People in high-visibility uniforms have also been spotted in the area. It is not currently known if anyone has been injured.

Reports suggest passengers have been "stuck on the train" until they can be safely evacuated. The incident is understood to have taken place near Martin Lane in Burscough, in the vicinity of its junction with Whitehouse Lane.

Disruption and ticket restrictions

Writing on social media platform X, Northern said: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident Wigan Wallgate - Southport all lines are blocked. Please note that other train operators may also be affected by disruption – please check your whole journey before travelling."

Northern added: "Northern train ticket restrictions have been lifted in the affected areas, including Advance and Peak restrictions, during this disruption. Restrictions will be reinstated once the disruption ends."
