Police are continuing to investigate after suspected human remains were found near the M67 motorway in Tameside.
Discovery and initial response
Officers were alerted by road workers who made the discovery on Monday evening (August 3) close to a bridge between junctions 3 and 4, between Hattersley and Hyde.
The motorway was closed throughout Tuesday as investigations were carried out, with forensic officers pictured working at the scene.
Ongoing investigation and road closures
Greater Manchester Police said on Wednesday that no update on the suspected human remains can be issued at this stage, but the investigation remains ongoing.
People were urged to avoid the area as the motorway was closed on Tuesday. At around 8.30pm on Tuesday, police concluded their investigations, National Highways said, but the same stretch remained closed due to planned roadworks and reopened at around 6am on Wednesday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, GMP said: "Detectives believe they have identified human remains found close to the M67 in #Tameside. Officers were called shortly after 11pm on Monday 3 August 2026 by road workers who made the discovery close to a bridge between junctions 3 and 4.
"We are working with specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind this incident. The road will be closed between junctions 3 and 4 while detectives carry out their investigation. Please continue to avoid the area and we will provide updates when we have them."
