Fire crews still battling Glasgow scrapyard blaze two days on

Firefighters are continuing to battle a huge blaze at a scrapyard in Glasgow two days after it broke out. The large fire erupted in the early hours of Saturday morning, October 10, on South Street in the city's west end.

Fire crews rushed to the scene after being alerted around 11.30pm and remain there on Sunday afternoon. Nine fire appliances, two high reach appliances, and specialist resources were sent at the height of the blaze. Three appliances remain on site as crews continue trying to dampen down the site of the fire. No one was hurt.

Drone footage shows scale of blaze

Footage of the raging inferno, which crews have now been battling for two nights to put out, showed smoke billowing into the night sky in the Scotstoun area as emergency services attempted to bring it under control. Drone footage taken of the aftermath also captures the scale of the fire. White smoke can be seen hovering over the industrial estate, a stone's throw from Partick and Whiteinch and situated by the River Clyde, as day breaks.

The blaze broke out in the west end in the Whiteinch and Scotstoun area. Locals flooded social media with worry after witnessing the event unfold. One wrote online: "It's all kicking off on South Street, been explosions for about 30 mins".

Residents urged to keep windows closed

Another penned: "Saw this out the window of our plane as we landed at Glasgow. Looked a bad one from the sky," while a third added: "Major fire in Glasgow near South Street. Scrap yard up in flames". A fourth described the scene, explaining: "We were there diverting traffic for half an hour while on call to police to inform them and ask for help... [we were] stopping traffic and people going through."

A concerned mum chimed in this morning: "My wee one was so scared with how bright and big it was. Stayed up half the night convincing him it would go out. Thanks to the brave fire staff. Hope it's out soon."

Nearby residents are still being urged to keep their windows and doors as closed as a precaution due to smoke in the area. Members of the public have also been told to avoid the area. If you are driving through smoke, you should keep air conditioning off and air vents closed.

Road closed as emergency services remain

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson previously said: "We are still in attendance at the fire on South Street in Glasgow. Our crews will remain in attendance overnight. Please continue to follow our advice and avoid the area. We thank you for your patience and understanding."
