A racecourse has released a statement following a massive brawl that erupted at the Epsom Derby on Saturday, an event attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla. Their Majesties arrived at the racecourse after attending the wedding of the King's nephew, Peter Phillips, to Harriet Sperling in The Cotswolds.
Royal Attendance at the Derby
King Charles and Queen Camilla watched the prestigious race and presented the trophy to winning trainer Aidan O'Brien, jockey Ronan Whelan, and the owners from Coolmore. It remains unclear whether the royal couple witnessed the altercation, which took place inside a stand at the Surrey racecourse shortly before 6 p.m.
Statement from Epsom Downs Racecourse
A spokesperson for Epsom Downs Racecourse, owned by The Jockey Club, stated: "Our security teams and police on site responded quickly to an incident on Saturday. This matter is now being dealt with by Surrey Police so it would not be appropriate to comment further, other than to say that this sort of behaviour has no place at our racecourse."
Arrests Made
Surrey Police confirmed that six individuals were arrested in connection with the fight. Approximately 28,500 people attended the event on Saturday.
Royal Wedding and Derby Connection
The King and Queen traveled directly from Peter Phillips' wedding to the Derby. They joined other royals, including Prince William and Princess Catherine, for the hour-long service before departing while other guests proceeded to the reception at Gatcombe Park estate. Despite rainy weather, Their Majesties remained cheerful, with Queen Camilla's yellow dress adding a splash of sunshine to the festivities.
