Coronation Street's Megan Walsh Sentenced to Five Years in Prison
Coronation Street's Megan Walsh Jailed for Five Years

In Friday night's episode of Coronation Street, Megan Walsh was sentenced to five years in prison for grooming and engaging in sexual activity with student Will Driscoll. The character, played by Beth Nixon in her television debut, has seemingly left the ITV soap following a controversial storyline that culminated in a courtroom verdict.

Courtroom Drama and Verdict

The trial saw Will initially claim to the jury that he had fabricated the allegations, but he later confessed to the truth. Despite Megan's arrogance, approaching him on the street and insisting she would be found innocent, the jury found her guilty of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity while in a position of trust. She was sentenced to five years in prison.

Upon hearing the verdict, Megan lashed out as the Driscoll family cheered, and her mother buried her head in her hands. Megan continued to protest her innocence, screaming at Will: "No, no, no. You are a liar! In your dreams, I like a real man. I'm innocent, please! He's a liar, he's a fantasist. This is a kangaroo court!" Through tears, she pleaded with her mother: "Mum, Mum, please don't... please don't let them take me," but she was removed from the court.

Reactions from Residents and Fans

At the Rovers Return, residents congratulated the Driscolls. Cassie Plummer quipped: "Five years, eh? I bet her face was tripping, dirty perv!" Will's father Ben added: "Well, it's a matter of public record now. Yes, her face was trippin' her. She threw all her toys out of the dock," as Eva noted: "The guards had to drag her off kicking and screaming."

Fans took to social media to praise Beth Nixon's performance. One viewer wrote: "What a story that was and what an actress she is. Beth Nixon was absolutely phenomenal throughout!" Another said: "For whatever it’s worth, it SEEMS like this trial is Megan’s swan song. While I will most definitely not miss Megan, I’ll absolutely miss seeing Beth Nixon on my screen. She did a great job portraying such a vile character."

Justice for Victims in Soap Operas

Many fans appreciated that the storyline concluded with justice, unlike recent trends in soaps like Emmerdale and Coronation Street, where villains have been killed off. One fan commented: "Megan found guilty so Corrie CAN let the victims get justice sometimes…." Another added: "It’s so refreshing to see Megan get convicted, instead of them killing her off like other abusers. You can see the relief on Will and his entire family’s faces."

Fans had previously complained about Emmerdale killing off Dr. Caitlin Todd after she sexually abused Charity Dingle, and Coronation Street having Sarah Platt murder Theo Silverton rather than face court for domestic abuse. One fan raged: "I just had a feeling that #Emmerdale was gonna kill Dr Todd off and here we are! Charity deserves justice, unfortunately now it’s not gonna happen. And now this storyline has turned into a whodunit! I have no words. Soaps needs to do better instead off killing off the villain! This storyline is so important to raise awareness for and in my opinion they have gone and ruined it for a cheap plot!" Another said: "can soaps stop unaliving the abusers please! todd and charity deserved to get justice. #emmerdale #corrie."

Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
