Durham Constabulary has confirmed that a 'suspicious item' found at a property in Stanley has been 'dealt with' by the bomb squad, and the 100-metre cordon erected in response has now been removed. The update comes after 60 homes on Robert Terrace in Shield Row were evacuated as a precaution.
Item dealt with and cordon removed
Police have stated that the item has been 'dealt with', allowing the cordon to be lifted. A man in his 70s who lives at the property is said to be 'helping officers' as they investigate the full circumstances of the incident.
Durham Constabulary also described the incident as an 'isolated incident', adding that there is 'no wider risk' to residents in the area. The force thanked locals for their support and patience while emergency services worked to ensure the situation was contained safely.

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: "We're happy to report that the suspicious item at a property in Robert Terrace has now been dealt with and the cordon removed. The resident within the address, a man in his 70s, has been spoken to and is helping officers with their enquiries."
The spokesperson added: "Officers are satisfied this was an isolated incident and there is no wider risk to the community. We would like to thank residents for their support and patience while we carried out our work to make sure the area was safe."
Emergency services at the scene
The incident was also attended by representatives of the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) and the North East Ambulance Service, although it is understood that no injuries have been reported.
Earlier, a CDDFRS spokesperson said: "We were called at 1.02pm today (August 11) to a police incident on Robert Terrace, Shield Row, Stanley. A 100 metre cordon is in place and arrangements have been made to evacuate residents. One fire engine from High Handenhold is at the scene and the crew is expected to be there for some time."
