An investigation has been launched in Lahore after a police officer was accused of raping a mentally disabled girl, leading to the suspension of 78 police staff members.
Officer arrested and suspended
The officer, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Imran of Ghaziabad Police Station, was immediately suspended and arrested following the report of the alleged assault. He remains in police custody while the investigation continues.
Staff suspended for alleged mishandling
The suspended staff include eight assistant sub-inspectors, five head constables, front desk staff, the station clerk, and drivers. The station's Senior House Officer has also been replaced. The staff are accused of delaying the handling of the case and negligence in the investigation, and allegedly failing to inform senior officials.
External team takes over
The investigation has been handed to an external team led by Deputy Inspector General of Police Faisal Kamran, a senior official overseeing the wider Lahore policing area. The role of the suspended officials is being examined, and further departmental or legal action may follow based on findings.
