60 homes evacuated in Stanley as bomb squad called

Around 60 homes have been evacuated on Robert Terrace in Shield Row, Stanley, after a suspicious item was discovered. Residents have been directed to the Louisa Centre on Front Street.

Emergency response

Emergency services, including the Bomb Squad, have been on the scene since just after 1pm this afternoon. Police made the public aware of the incident at around 1.15pm.

Police are asking people to stay away from the area, and a 100-metre cordon is in place, encompassing Newburn Road and Ryton Crescent. They say the MOD's bomb disposal team is working "as quickly as possible" to assess the scene.
