A new scam targets Tesco Clubcard holders with emails claiming their points are about to expire. The Mirror Online's tech team spotted the urgent message and found it leads to a convincing fake Tesco website that requests credit card details.
Fake email and website
The email states that thousands of Clubcard points are expiring and urges users to act quickly. It reads: "We noticed that the email address associated with your account has 4,147 Tesco Clubcard points that are about to expire. Don't let your rewards go to waste!"
The message continues: "You can easily turn these points into valuable vouchers to use on your grocery shopping or exchange them for amazing treats with our Reward Partners."
Clicking the link leads to a website that closely resembles an official Tesco page. Following the on-screen instructions, the Mirror team entered fake details and were eventually asked for a phone number, name, address, email, and finally full credit card details to redeem the points.
Tesco's official warning
Those who fall for the trick could hand over everything a hacker needs to access bank accounts and make fraudulent payments. The email has been circulating for several weeks, with many Tesco users sharing on social media that they received the scam.
On its help page, Tesco states it will never email users or ask for personal details via email. "You could get a genuine-looking email saying it's from us," Tesco said. "But it asks you for information such as a password, date of birth, Clubcard number or bank details. Some emails may ask you to click a link to another website. We'd never do this. Emails like this are likely to be fake. The only time we'd ask for this information is if you've contacted us and we're replying to you. But we'll never ask you for your password."
Anyone receiving a message claiming Clubcard points are expiring should be cautious before clicking links or entering personal data.
