Ex-cop, 80, who plotted to be 'most evil' serial killer jailed for rape and murder fantasies
Ex-cop, 80, jailed again for rape and murder fantasies

Brian Darby, 80, a former police officer who conspired to become a serial killer and was jailed for life in 2002, has been sentenced to an additional four years in prison for distributing horrifying rape and murder fantasies online and creating AI-generated indecent images of children. The sentence was handed down at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday, with an extra two years on licence upon release. Judge John Law warned Darby that he may now die in prison without ever being released again.

Darby's Release and Reoffending

Darby was released on licence in 2017 after serving 15 years of his life sentence. However, the court heard that he almost immediately began viewing indecent images of children online. In February 2026, police arrested him after he created and distributed AI-generated indecent images of children. They also discovered online conversations where he shared rape and murder fantasies.

Prosecutor Bartholomew O'Toole told the hearing that Darby posted a sexual fantasy involving killing children on Reddit and engaged in chats detailing his ambitions to strangle, smother, and drown women. One post described the “strangulation of his wife with family gathering around to voice encouragement and advice.” In another, Darby suggested schools should “train girls to be sex slaves and dominatrices” and that women should be killed at age 30.

Judge's Assessment and Sentencing

Judge Law described Darby as “emotionally detached and indifferent” when questioned about his recent offences, noting he “did not appear to be embarrassed or ashamed.” The judge stated that the online fantasies “echo” Darby's 2002 convictions for attempted murder, conspiracy to murder, and aggravated burglary. He assessed Darby as a dangerous offender due to his “entrenched interest in violent sexual material involving children and adults, your online dissemination of that material and fantasies, and a pattern of offending.”

Darby's Criminal History

Darby was dismissed from Leicestershire Police in the 1970s after being convicted of indecently assaulting boys. He later worked as a health and safety officer for the BBC during the 1980s. In 2001, he pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was convicted of conspiracy to murder alongside his partner Jeanette White. The Old Bailey heard that White was “under the spell” of Darby as they exchanged about 450 pages of letters discussing serial killing, rape, cannibalism, and necrophilia.

By 2000, their fantasies turned into reality when they conspired to murder a woman and her children in their Westminster home. Darby also responded to adverts from women seeking roommates to stalk them. A 45-year-old mother narrowly escaped death when Darby visited her home in Ealing, west London, pretending to be a BBC researcher. He put a wire noose around her neck with intent to rape and kill her, but she fled into the street.

Use of AI and Encryption

The court was told Darby used encryption technology to hide his identity while using AI to generate indecent images of children. His defence lawyer, Olivia Beach, stated Darby acknowledges his actions were “wrong” but attributes them to an “addiction which is something out of his control and there is nothing he can do about it.” The court also heard that Darby volunteers in prison to listen to other prisoners' problems.

Sentencing and Parole Implications

Darby, from Enfield, north London, will serve about two and a half years of his four-year sentence before being considered for release. However, he must also persuade the Parole Board that he is safe to be released from his life sentence. He pleaded guilty to nine charges of obscene communication, three counts of creating indecent photographs of a child, and two counts of distributing indecent photographs of a child.
