GMP refers itself to watchdog after Bolton man dies

Greater Manchester Police has referred itself to the police watchdog after a man died in hospital following an incident in Bolton. The force said officers responded to reports of a concern for welfare at Somerville Square in Halliwell at around 8.30pm on Wednesday.

Man became unwell at the scene

Police and paramedics were called to the scene after the reports. In a statement on Thursday, GMP said the man became 'unwell' while officers were there. He was treated at the scene and then taken to hospital, where he later died.

Mandatory referral to the IOPC

The force said a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which will take the lead on matters relating to its investigation. GMP said it will fully assist. Police remained at the scene on Thursday, with a cordon in place.

The man has not been named, and no further details have been revealed.
