Teenager dies at Welsh festival weeks after 18th birthday

An 18-year-old woman who died after being taken ill at a music festival in Wales has been remembered as a bright, funny and kind young woman. Lucy Halpin, from Anglesey, died in hospital following a medical emergency at Tonnau Festival on July 11, just weeks after celebrating her 18th birthday.

Emergency response and festival cancellation

North Wales Police said emergency services were called to the Carreglwyd Estate in Llanfaethlu at around 1:45 a.m. on July 11. Despite the efforts of paramedics and festival welfare staff, Lucy later died in hospital. The festival, which was scheduled to run from July 10 to 12, was cancelled following the incident.

Detective Inspector Iolo Edwards said: “Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family and loved ones at this difficult time. We urge members of the public not to speculate on the circumstances of the death, and anybody with information that could assist our enquiries should contact us.”

Tributes from friends and colleagues

A fundraiser set up by Lucy’s friends described her as “kind, caring and a good friend.” The tribute added: “Anyone who knew Lucy would know she was kind, caring and a good friend. Everyone around her knew how bright and funny she was. She lit up every room she walked into and put a smile on everyone’s face without fail.”

The Breeze Hill Bar, Eatery and Hotel, where Lucy worked, posted a tribute calling her a “treasured” colleague. The post read: “It has been a very sad week at The Breeze Hill. A broken pub full of broken hearts. Our wonderful Lucy was taken away from us last Friday, just a few weeks following her 18th Birthday. Lucy wasn’t just staff, Lucy was a member of our extended family and was treasured by us, our customers and her colleagues, many of whom became her close friends. Lucy was caring, funny, clever and always smiling.”

Investigation ongoing

North Wales Police confirmed the death is being treated as unexpected while investigations continue. The coroner has been informed. Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting reference O110259.

Tonnau Festival organisers expressed deep sadness, stating: “From the moment the attendee became unwell, our on-site welfare teams, security, and emergency medical staff responded immediately. Paramedics and welfare personnel did everything they could to provide emergency care, but unfortunately they later died in hospital. The safety and well-being of our audience is always our highest priority.”
