Drivers are experiencing severe traffic delays near Stansted Airport following two multi-vehicle crashes on the M11. The incidents have led to five-mile queues and 45-minute delays, causing gridlock on Friday afternoon.
Collision Details
The first serious multi-vehicle crash occurred between junction 10 at Royston and junction 9 at Newmarket, closing both directions of the motorway. Shortly after, a second crash shut two lanes southbound between junction 9 Newmarket and junction 8 Stansted Airport. Emergency services are at the scene, and vehicle recovery has been arranged.
National Highways reported that delays are building rapidly, with stationary traffic stretching five miles back towards Cambridgeshire. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes or allow extra travel time.
M1 Disruption
Separately, drivers on the M1 are facing 60-minute delays after a broken-down lorry blocked the motorway between junction 11 near Luton and Luton Airport. The lorry's brakes locked, making it immobile. Recovery teams are working to clear the vehicle.

National Highways East tweeted: "2 lanes are closed on M11 south between J9 (Newmarket) and J8 (Stansted Airport) due to a multi-vehicle collision. Emergency services on scene. Recovery has been arranged and en route. Delays building, currently 45 minutes and 5 miles of congestion on the approach." Metro has contacted emergency services for further comment.
