Troon, a seaside port in South Ayrshire, has been named one of the UK's best retirement towns by WorldAtlas. The town, located just over 30 miles from Glasgow, was praised for its golfing opportunities, coastal walks, and community facilities.
What makes Troon stand out
According to WorldAtlas, Troon's Royal Troon Golf Club, founded in 1878, has hosted The Open Championship ten times, most recently in 2024. The town also offers three municipal courses at Troon Links for more casual play.
Beyond golf, the seafront is a key draw. The long coastal walk around South Bay provides wide views across the Firth of Clyde toward Arran. The Muirhead Activity Centre offers fitness classes and activities like badminton and pickleball.
Community and amenities
WorldAtlas highlighted the Muirhead Activity Centre as a hub for community life, with classes from early-morning workouts to gentler core sessions. Everyday care is close by, including a physiotherapy practice, a footcare clinic, and a care home offering several levels of support.
For food, The Wee Hurrie, a fish and chip shop in the harbour, is renowned for its crispy batter and perfectly cooked chips.
Recognition and context
Troon was the only other Scottish location on WorldAtlas's list of eight best retirement towns, alongside Cruden Bay in Aberdeenshire. The full list is available on the WorldAtlas website.
