After graduating from the University of Portsmouth, the writer spent considerable time along this coastline and found it to be a top choice for a staycation.

The fresh sea air, relaxed atmosphere, and holiday feeling without leaving the UK make Southsea appealing. Unlike more famous seaside destinations, it never feels overwhelmingly crowded with tourists or locals. While Bournemouth Beach is regularly ranked among the UK's best by Tripadvisor and attracts thousands of summer visitors, Southsea offers stunning views across the Solent, historic seafront, and a laid-back vibe.
Historic Landmarks and Attractions
Out at sea, the historic forts built in the 19th century to defend Portsmouth Harbour during fears of a French invasion under Napoleon III remain one of Southsea's most distinctive landmarks. The promenade is ideal for cycling, walking, or simply sitting on a bench watching boats. Behind the seafront, the Southsea Rose Gardens feature colourful flowers in bloom during warmer months. Nearby, Canoe Lake offers pedalos for families and mini golf for those preferring dry land.
