Oxford Street's hidden winter haven: heated igloos atop John Lewis
Heated igloos atop John Lewis offer winter haven from Oxford Street

1864 Rooftop Bar & Kitchen, located on the sixth floor of John Lewis on Oxford Street, has opened three heated igloos to the public as of yesterday. The rooftop, previously described as a 'hidden garden oasis' in summer, is now being dubbed a 'winter haven' by visitors, offering music, festive food and panoramic views.

Escape the festive chaos

Oxford Street sees an estimated 500,000 pedestrians daily, with 300 shops lining its 1.5-mile stretch. While tourists may enjoy the hustle and bustle, many Londoners avoid the area. The igloos provide a way to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere without the crowds.

Each igloo can host up to eight people seated or 10 standing, with two and a half hours of exclusive use. Guests can control their own music via a speaker in each igloo.

Dining and opening times

The bar offers a Set Feasting Menu for sharing at £65 per person, featuring dishes like 'Harissa king prawns with rose harissa butter, garlic confit and preserved lemon' and 'Buttermilk fried chicken with lime, chilli, honey and coriander'. An À La Carte Menu is also available.

Opening hours are 12pm to 9pm on Mondays, 12pm to 10pm Tuesday to Saturday, and 12pm to 7pm on Sundays.

The igloo trend extends beyond Oxford Street, with Aviary in Finsbury Square and Circe's in Waterloo also proving popular with city dwellers. For those keen to combine Christmas shopping with mulled wine atop a department store, reservations are likely to be in high demand.
