Embleton Bay in Northumberland has been named the world's most underrated beach by travel agency Skyscanner, earning an average review rating of 4.9 and a description as "wild, windswept and wonderfully uncrowded".
Top spot in Skyscanner's Paradise Guide
The beach topped Skyscanner's list in its Paradise Guide this month, praised for its stretches of golden sand and rolling dunes as a quieter retreat from the crowds.
Skyscanner noted: "Embleton Bay is proof that some of the UK's best beaches are hiding in plain sight." They added: "Backed by rolling dunes and overlooked by the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, this hidden gem with a long stretch of golden sand feels a world away from nearby busier seaside hotspots such as Alnmouth and Blyth Beach. Visit between June and September for the best chance of sunshine and coastal walks with a view."
Location and setting
Situated along the North Sea in Northumberland, the beach lies just outside the village of Embleton, between Low Newton-by-the-Sea and the ancient Dunstanburgh Castle. The 14th-century castle ruins overlook the beach, adding to its striking setting.
The sweeping, soft-sand beach is framed by rolling dunes and remains unspoilt, offering ample space for beach days and coastal walks.
Visitor praise

Another commented: "What a beautiful, quiet beach this was. We accessed through the golf club, watch out for balls. Just a lovely walk along the beach." One traveller called it "probably one of the most beautiful bays anywhere in the world," while another noted: "Embleton Bay is a hidden gem on the Northumberland coast. The beach is powdery white sand, and the sea is clear and safe for bathing. Dunstanburgh Castle makes a dramatic backdrop, and it is a pleasant walk along the coast to Craster."
