Clovelly: UK's car-free seaside village frozen in time

Clovelly, a traffic-free fishing village in North Devon, has been described as "stepping into another era" thanks to its cobbled streets and coastal views. The privately owned village is one of the nation's last car-free spots, often leaving it feeling frozen in time.

A storybook setting with steep streets

The village features steep narrow streets lined with whitewashed cottages, cosy pubs, museums and galleries. Attractions include the Court Gardens and the Quay, making it a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

In 2020, Clovelly was named Britain's Most Instagrammable Village. It is also said to have inspired artists and writers, most notably Charles Dickens. The village was originally owned by William the Conqueror, who gifted it to his wife.

Visitor experiences and accommodation

Visitors should be warned the streets are famously steep, but the views and cream teas at the end are worth the workout. Holiday homes in the area are available from £295 for seven nights with holidaycottages.co.uk, while Sykes Holiday Cottages offers breaks from £683. The village itself has the Red Lion Hotel, an 18th-century inn with 17 rooms, all with sea views.

Nate McFall, UK Joy Seeker for holidaycottages.co.uk, visited and said the village "feels like stepping into another era". He added: "It's unlike anywhere else I've visited in the UK, and I've seen a fair share of our most beautiful places! There's a real sense of charm and history around every corner, including its donkeys and cliff-side views. And despite all its beauty, it still feels like a hidden gem - I personally didn't know it existed until now - that deserves a spot on every traveller's bucket list."

Entry fees and visiting details

Because the village is privately owned, visitors must pay an entry fee. Adult tickets cost £10.90 and child tickets £6.25, while children under seven go free. More information is available on clovelly.co.uk.
