British woman defies warnings and falls in love with Naples

A British woman ignored online warnings about one Italian city and headed there with her brother, discovering a vibrant destination full of life, culture, and friendly locals.

Choosing Naples Against Advice

Vita Molyneux and her brother had previously visited Moneglia in Genoa, a peaceful coastal village near Cinque Terre, as well as the Tuscan cities of Florence and Siena. For their next trip, they chose Naples, a southern Italian city famed for its pizza, vibrant nightlife, and bustling cobbled streets. However, when they shared their plans, the common response was: "Naples? Why would you go to Naples?" The city was described as 'dodgy', 'unsafe', and 'frightening'. Social media amplified these fears, with TikTok videos warning against visiting Naples, calling it 'the most dangerous city in the world'. Despite feeling rattled, Vita remained resolute and went ahead with the trip, saying the experience "served as a valuable reminder not to trust everything you read online".

Arrival and First Impressions

Their adventure began with a delayed flight, landing in Naples around 1am. The journey from the airport to their accommodation in the iconic Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarter) was "slightly unnerving". Vita recalled: "Naples was unlike any other Italian city I had visited. Admittedly, it appeared somewhat dilapidated, with potholed roads and graffiti-laden walls. However, there was already something endearing about it." Their Airbnb host personally drove to the airport to pick them up, a testament to the incredible kindness of the Neapolitan people.

Exploring the City

On their first full day, Vita and her brother explored the Quartieri Spagnoli, with its labyrinthine cobbled streets, bustling markets, and colourful shop fronts adorned with bunting. Their visit coincided with Napoli winning their first Serie A league title since 1990. Images of Diego Maradona, the footballing maestro worshipped in Naples, were everywhere. "The atmosphere was electrifying and utterly captivating," Vita said. They hiked up to Castel Sant'Elmo, a medieval fortress dating back to 1275, which offered breathtaking views over the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.

A Visit to Pompeii

Vita had longed to see Pompeii since childhood. The ancient city, destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 AD, is one of the most well-preserved historical sites globally. Just half an hour away by train, they arrived early and opted for audio guides to explore at their own pace. A guide marked their maps with intriguing areas, as Pompeii's vastness makes it impossible to see everything in one day. They meandered through the ancient village, absorbing the stories of its former inhabitants.

Nightlife and Food

After a full day, they returned to the city for evening drinks and Neapolitan pizza, touted as the world's best. Vita described the nightlife as second to none, starting with an Aperol spritz in a local bar before enjoying extraordinary pizza. Their three-day stay was thoroughly enjoyable, despite the bustling streets requiring bravery to cross. "The city buzzes with activity, the views are breathtaking, and the locals are delightful," she said.

Final Thoughts

Vita's overriding takeaway: "Don't take everything you read online at face value, as I discovered. However, if you're reading this and contemplating a trip to Naples – trust me, you should go."
