Brighton Wheel could return to seafront after 10 years

The Brighton Wheel, a popular seaside attraction, could return to the UK resort after 10 years. Councillors will decide in October whether to bring back the 164ft attraction to the Brighton seafront.

Decision on 25-year lease

Brighton and Hove City Council will decide whether to award a 25-year lease to reinstate the landmark, which opened in 2011, back to its original site on Madeira Drive.

The attraction shut in May 2016. Following the expiration of its lease, it was dismantled to make way for the development of the i360.

Proposal and operator

The firm behind the Brighton Zip & Daltons Venue has proposed to re-install the wheel and keep the current zip-line attraction in operation. The firm will seek to have the wheel operational by next summer if approved.

Brighton and Hove City Councillor David McGregor said the return of the ferris wheel will "bring new energy" to the seafront. "Brighton became Brighton because people came here to have fun by the sea," he said. "That's part of our identity, and we should be ambitious about what a great seaside city looks like for the next generation."

Visitor numbers

The attraction is believed to have seen more than 250,000 visitors annually during its tenure.
