Magpie Cottage in Hanmer is a newly restored 17th-century thatched cottage with views across Hanmer Mere and plenty of countryside to explore nearby. It sleeps up to four guests and is ideally placed for exploring North Wales, Shropshire and Cheshire, with the medieval towns of Shrewsbury and Chester both within 20 miles.
History and location
Originally built around 1668 during the reign of Charles II, the cottage is reputed to be one of the oldest homes in the village. The cottage is particularly suited to walkers, cyclists and bird watchers, with the Shropshire Way, Offa’s Dyke, Cheshire Sandstone Way and Land’s End to John O’Groats Trail all within reach. Guests can also explore Snowdonia, visit nearby gardens or enjoy wild swimming in Hanmer Mere.
Interior and amenities
Inside, the property has been restored while retaining original features including oak beams and an inglenook fireplace. There is a well-equipped kitchen with views of the Mere, a parlour dining area, comfortable lounge with Smart TV, downstairs shower room and two bedrooms upstairs, including a spacious principal bedroom with a super-king size bed.
There is also underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove, while outside the lawn garden provides a peaceful spot for sitting out, enjoying an al-fresco meal or taking in the waterside views.
