Man United talks to extend Bruno Fernandes contract
Man United in talks to extend Bruno Fernandes contract

Manchester United have opened talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, with the club captain's extension seen as the most important deal of the summer window. The 31-year-old's current deal runs until 2027, with an option for another year, and securing his future would be a major statement of intent.

Fernandes' Pivotal Role

Fernandes has been pivotal for United since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020. He broke the Premier League season assist record last term, contributing 21 assists and nine goals, helping the club secure a third-placed finish and a return to the Champions League. His influence extends beyond goal contributions, as he has carried the team through challenging campaigns.

Last year, Fernandes turned down an offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, later revealing that he felt the club were happy for him to leave at the time. He told Maisfutebol: "I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club. The conversation with the manager also made me stay. But, from the club's side, I felt a bit like; 'If you leave, it's not so bad for us'. It hurts me a lot."

Club's Stance Has Changed

A year on, United's stance could not be more different. Club sources have insisted to the Manchester Evening News that Fernandes is not available at any price following interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray. The Athletic has since reported that United are in talks over extending the midfielder's contract.

The transfer window so far has been defined by a midfield rebuild, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos arriving, but the importance of continuity can easily be overlooked. Fernandes' new deal would send a clear signal to prospective transfer targets that the club has ambition.

Fernandes' Ambition

Fernandes has spoken about his dream of leading United back to the Premier League title. In an interview with The Times in April, he said: "The expectation will always be we [United] want to win the Premier League. I know people will think, 'you go to get more money, better contracts.' No, you come to Man United because you want to win trophies."

He added: "Money, you can get anywhere. A lot of clubs in the Premier League pay well, a lot of clubs in Italy, Spain, pay you a lot. You come to this club because of the history, because of what you think you can achieve."

In 327 games for United, Fernandes has scored 107 goals and provided 108 assists. His mentality and drive to see the team succeed make agreeing on a new contract priceless for United, showing why the club must keep hold of him for the long-term future.
