YouTube restaurant reviewer Gary Hanna visited St. George's Plaice in Llandudno, widely considered the UK's worst fish and chip shop, and found greasy, overpriced food that even seagulls rejected. The chippy holds a 1.6 out of 5 rating on Tripadvisor, with customers complaining of poor quality, high prices, and food poisoning.
First impressions deceiving
Hanna, who runs the GaryEats channel, hoped the reviews were too harsh. His first impression was favourable due to the scenic location and netting protecting diners from seagulls. However, the employee behind the counter recited a long list of unavailable items, forcing Hanna to order pollock and chips with a sausage, mushy peas, and curry sauce.
Disappointing meal
His first chip was promising, but the pollock was extremely greasy. The batter was largely hollow, with little fish inside. Hanna described the pollock as 'mushy' and 'rather unpleasant,' telling waiting seagulls they would regret eating it. The pollock cost £9.95, chips £3.95, sausage £4.45, and small tubs of curry sauce and mushy peas £2.25 each. Hanna called the mushy peas 'sour' and the curry sauce 'thin and flavourless.'
Low effort and quality
Hanna said he could 'understand' the low rating, adding 'the effort that's gone in there is borderline zero.' The £4.50 sausage was a standard catering-grade product, which he called 'a disaster' and 'not a nice sausage.' He noted a sign saying 'Do not feed the seagulls' and joked they were 'trying to keep them alive.'
Seagull attack and refund
While looking for a napkin, a seagull swooped in and stole the remaining sausage. Hanna decided to return the meal and demand a refund. The woman behind the counter said, 'Normally, we just have people coming in and just throwing it back at us.' Hanna commented that if people 'normally' demand refunds, 'there's something deeply wrong.' He added that the young staff must find the situation awful and urged the owner to 'massively improve.'
