Poundland has permanently closed its Inverurie store after 16 years of serving the local community. The branch, located at Unit 3 on Station Square Road, shut its doors for the final time on Monday, August 17.
The closure leaves just two Poundland branches in the North East of Scotland: Aberdeen's Trinity Centre and Berryden Retail Park.
Staff and shoppers react
In a heartfelt Facebook post, employees said they were "very sad" to be leaving the Scottish town and that it had "been a pleasure" to serve locals. The full statement read: "This store is now closed. We are very sad to be leaving Inverurie after 16 years. We would like to thank our loyal customers for visiting us day in and day out, it has been a pleasure to serve you and the local community."
"We would also like to thank our amazing colleagues for all their hard work and great service over the years. Team Inverurie."
Customers have not taken the news well, with some branding it "a huge downfall". One commenter wrote: "Sad news, won't be the same without you. All the best to you all in your next adventure in life." Another said: "So sad to see the store closed. It was a great place for all sorts of things and Paul was such a star and so supportive of the local community."
Broader context
This is one of the first Poundland closures in months, following the shuttering of the branch in Edinburgh's West Retail Park in April. It is not related to the massive restructuring plan that concluded in January and is most likely down to the lease not being renewed.
The bargain retail chain's presence in Scotland has been significantly downsized since last year, with stores in Edinburgh, Coatbridge, Kilmarnock and Port Glasgow permanently closing as part of the revamp. This came after the firm was bought by investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1 in June 2025. Alongside reducing the UK store estate from 800 to between 650 and 700, the loyalty scheme was scrapped and the single pound pricing point returned.
However, several stores earmarked for closure were saved following negotiations with landlords, including Musselburgh, Porthcawl, Livingston and Irvine.
