Northwich Market's £1.8 million revamp at Barons Quay is set to open next month, with Cheshire West and Chester Council announcing a precise date in the coming weeks as construction finishes and stallholders prepare to move in.
Biggest investment since the 1960s
This marks the largest investment in the market since the 1960s, aiming to secure a thriving future for traders. An engagement report found 56% (660 responses) rarely or never visited the current market, calling it 'scruffy, run down and out of the way', while 45% (5,222 responses) frequented Barons Quay weekly.
71% (836 responses) backed the new market, prioritising food and drink stalls, especially Asian cuisine, bars, and breakfast/brunch options, alongside produce and services.
Current market closure and unaffected businesses
Trading at Weaver Square ends on Saturday, August 29. The Market Hall Café continues as usual, and Askins and Colins Hair, in external shop units, remains unaffected.
The Style Hut is confirmed for the new venue, with other traders offered spots at Winsford Market or alternative locations. All received consultation and free business support for pitch applications.
Council's vision for a modern market
Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, said: "Many residents will have fond memories of the old market in Weaver Square, which first opened in the 1960s. Times and public expectations have changed since, and at a time when other councils are closing or withdrawing from markets, this Council recognises markets remain important to town centres."
"The brand new Northwich Market will offer a much-improved experience for visitors and traders, including a prominent location within Barons Quay, fully accessible social space, indoor and outdoor seating, free WiFi, public toilets and a greater variety of food, drink and goods traders. We are all looking forward to a new chapter for Northwich Market, and seeing it thrive again."
