Barry Island Restaurant Opening in Former 100-Year-Old Toilet Block
Barry Island Restaurant Opening in Former Toilet Block

Morio Lounge, a new restaurant and bar operated by the west of England-based café-bar group Loungers, will open at Nell’s Point, Barry Island on Saturday, July 11. The venue occupies a Grade II listed former public toilet block dating back to the 1920s, which had been closed since 1995.

Delayed Opening Due to Power Issues

The opening was postponed due to power connection problems, as previously reported. The scheme had been under discussion since the toilets closed in 1995, and the building was marketed for years before being announced as a restaurant hub in 2018.

Transformation and Design

The building has been revitalised with richly patterned wallpapers, murals, colourful tiling, stripped wooden floors, oversized vintage sofas, upholstered lounge chairs, and an eclectic mix of artwork. The project has created approximately 30 new jobs.

The all-day menu includes brunch, tapas, toasties, salads, burgers, tacos, noodles, and fried chicken, with vegan and gluten-free options. A children's menu is available, along with games, books, and colouring pencils to entertain families.

Manager's Statement

Matt Birch, general manager of Morio Lounge, said: “Opening day is now just around the corner, and we’re so excited to finally welcome the community into Morio Lounge. The support and enthusiasm we’ve already felt from local people has been incredible, and we can’t wait to open our doors and become a place where everyone can come together and enjoy great food, drinks and a brilliant atmosphere.”
