Avocado taste test: Sainsbury's and Morrisons beat Co-op and Tesco
Avocado taste test: Sainsbury's and Morrisons come out on top

A comparison of avocados from four major UK supermarkets found clear differences in quality, with Sainsbury's and Morrisons emerging as the best options. The test, carried out by Isobel Pankhurst, also found that one Tesco avocado developed mould before it could be eaten, while Co-op's version was deemed flavourless and stringy.

Sainsbury's and Morrisons impress

Sainsbury's avocados were priced at £1.50 for two ripe and ready avocados, 95p for one large and 69p for a medium. The avocado was a good size and at the right level of ripeness, smooth and easy to cut and spread, tasting like the average avocado. It was enjoyed on toast with red pepper flakes.

Morrisons offered the same price point as Sainsbury's, though without the medium option at 69p. The quality and ripeness were about the same, and the size was similar. Both supermarkets delivered exactly what you would expect from an avocado, suitable for toast, salads, or blending into a sauce.

Tesco and Co-op disappoint

Tesco's avocados, at the same price point as Sainsbury's and Morrisons, were described as a mixed bag. The first was average, but the second developed what looked like mould on the outside by the second day, despite the Tesco website stating they should last two or more days in the fridge. It was thrown away without being cut open.

Co-op was the most expensive, at £2 for a pack of two ripe and ready avocados, 50p more than the others. However, the higher price did not lead to higher quality. The avocado was somewhat flavourless and more stringy than the others, though it was still a good size and ripe.
