American in UK Visits Argos for First Time, Says 'So Cool'

An American woman who recently moved to the UK with her British husband has visited Argos for the first time, and her reaction has captured the attention of social media users. The video, posted to Instagram, shows her genuine surprise as she steps inside the store, a retail experience unique to Britain.

A First Visit to a British Institution

Brit, an American who has been married to her English husband Tom for 18 years, relocated to the UK with their four children earlier this year. Shortly after settling in, Tom decided to introduce her to Argos, a store that operates solely within the United Kingdom, having closed all 34 of its Republic of Ireland locations in 2023.

As she walked through the doors, Brit told her followers: "I didn't even know this existed. In the 18 years that Tom and I have been together, he has never brought me here. We're in Argos." When Tom asked what she thought, she summed it up in two words: "So cool."

The Unique Argos Concept

What struck her most was the absence of physical products on display. Instead of shelves stocked with goods, she encountered row after row of touch screens, a far cry from the traditional shopping experience she was used to in the United States. Tom explained that Argos once relied on thick printed catalogues, which were once as common in British homes as a television set.

He likened the concept to Amazon, but with instant gratification: if an item is in stock, customers can walk out with it immediately, with no waiting for a delivery driver. "I've intentionally never brought Brit into Argos, because it's just an endless screen of 'let's just get stuff'," Tom admitted. "If you thought next-day Amazon was dangerous, this is immediate Amazon."

Mixed Reactions and Nostalgia

Brit's enthusiasm waned slightly as she scrolled through the digital catalogue and realised the product range is more focused than sprawling online marketplaces. Argos centres largely on electronics, home appliances, and children's toys, with a limited clothing offering. When Tom confirmed that a wide range of handbags was not exactly Argos's strong suit, Brit responded: "Well, that's less exciting."

The video resonated deeply with British viewers, who shared nostalgic memories in the comments. One wrote: "I miss the catalogue. Not the same online." Another recalled: "My younger son basically learnt to read from the Argos catalogue. He used to tear out the toy section and take it on holiday, highlighting in coloured pens what he wanted for Christmas!" A third added: "I live in Canada now, and we don't have anything similar either. I really miss Argos!"
