Objections have been lodged against proposals for a new seven-days-a-week alcohol licence for a Whitley Bay fast food restaurant. North Tyneside councillors will decide next week whether to allow Friez & Burgz, at 162-164 Whitley Road, to offer patrons alcoholic drinks from 9am to 10.30pm every day.
The application for the restaurant states sales will only be for consumption on the premises, with the last sale to take place half an hour before the close of each business day. The application also states the restaurant will install a refusal log, a robust CCTV system, and staff training.
Five objections logged
However, five objections had been logged by the local authority ahead of the licensing sub-committee's meeting on September 4. One objector submitted: "Sale of alcohol would encourage more rubbish, rowdiness and anti-social behaviour in the area where there's already an abundance of premises selling alcohol; shops, bars, and eateries. This is not a place, I believe, which is either suitable or necessitates for alcohol sales."
Another added: "If the authority is minded to grant the licence, we ask that very strict conditions are considered to protect neighbouring residents, including measures relating to waste management, customer behaviour, parking, prevention of public nuisance, and responsible alcohol sales."
Residents' fears over anti-social behaviour
Another objector wrote: "There are several other liquor establishments in this area. My fear [sic] anti-social behaviour will increase. This problem already exists and has created great anxiety."
The council's sub-committee will gather at 10am next Friday at its Cobalt Business Park HQ to consider the application. Friez & Burgz operate across the North East from Forest Hall to Chester-le-Street.
